What is the difference between the in-store and online inventories?

The in-store inventory does not have a database and is shoppable in-store, or by contacting us directly. We must check the shelves to see what we have. These are commonly printed materials and are generally priced at $15 and lower. The online inventory is more collectible, out of print, hard to find materials and have a value of $20 or more. These are searchable online here, or by clicking "Search Collectibles" above.

What can I spend my store credits on?

Store credits can be spent on any book with a yellow Bay Used Books sticker. Items sold by local authors, artists, or store merch cannot be paid for with store credit. Our store credits do not expire.

Do you buy books?

In more than 99% of cases we offer a store credit for books. There can sometimes be a rare 1% cash exception.

Can I bring in multiple boxes or bags of books for trade?

Yes! No matter the quantity of books, we will arrange to have them taken in. With any trade of 5 or more boxes, it is always appreciated to have notice in advance.

What gets me the most store credit?

Leaving the yellow Bay Used Books sticker on the front cover will guarantee you the best store credit of up to 40% of what you paid for. We also give more store credit for "hot ticket" items, new releases, and high-demand authors/titles. We give anywhere between ten cents and five dollars per book depending on the demand, condition, and what we already have instore.

What books do you take?

We take most books! What we DON'T take are: encyclopedias, textbooks, reader's digest condensed, magazines, Harlequins older than a year, any ex-library books, or books damaged by mold, mildew, or cigarette smoke.

How is the store organized?

The store is organized by genre first, then alphabetical by author's last name. We have a detailed map of the store to show you where the various sections are, and staff members are happy to give a guided tour.

 Do you have new books?

We don't order any new books, but we do have a New Release section near the front desk that has plenty of titles recently published within the past year.

How many books do you have?

Our best guess is about or at least half a million. There hasn't been an official count in over 20 years, but please, be our guest and start counting!

Do you sell gift certificates?

Yes! These are treated like cash and do not expire. You can buy them in-store in any dollar amount at any time.

Is there parking?

Yes! The Bay Used Books Parking Lot is on the right-hand side of the building and is accessible via Elm Street or Vanier Lane. You'll see the large murals with our sign and Anne of Green Gables.

What are the Hours of Operation?

The store hours change twice a year. We are generally open later in the evening during the summer. Visit the Contact Us page for our current hours.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes! As long as your pet is well-behaved and on a leash or in a carrier, we are happy to have your fur friends join your literary adventures!
